Cempedak!!
If you live in the tropics and are worried about food security and food systems resilience: plant Artocarpus! The more different species, the more individual trees, the sooner, the better! The most commonly known are jackfruit, breadfruit, breadnut, marang, and cempedak.
Pictured here is the cempedak tree right behind our house, which will gift us with over 50 fruits this year. The seeds are absolutely fantastic when boiled and can be eaten as a carbohydrate staple instead of rice (as with all other seeds of Artocarpus spp.), and the young whole fruit can be eaten cooked, baked or grilled as well.
Cempedak, unlike jackfruit, has a very pronounced season, so if you want to have food secured year round, diversity is the key.
Plant it once, and eat for the rest of your life 😉

ฤดูฝนมาแล้ว!
โชคดีแค่ไหนที่ได้เก็บฟืนทันเวลาก่อนฝนมา😍
วิถีพื้นบ้านอีกอย่างหนึ่งที่พวกเรายึดถือและสานต่อความสัมพันธ์ของเรากับสิ่งแวดล้อมบนสันเขาแห่งนี้กันต่อไป
ไม้ต้นนี้ชื่อว่า ต้นหยอง พืชตระกูลถั่วอีกชนิดหนึ่งที่เป็นมิตรกับพวกเรามากๆ เกิดเองตามธรรมชาติ ทิ้งกิ่งแห้งให้พวกเราได้เก็บมาทำฟืนก่อไฟทำอาหาร รมควันขับไล่ยุง และให้ความอุ่นกับพวกเราตลอดทั้งปี เนื้อไม้เหนียว/ไม้ติดไฟง่าย/ควันเยอะแต่ก็เป็นไฟดีมากๆ นอกจากจะใช้ประโยชน์จากกิ่งแห้งแล้ว เมล็ดในฝักอ่อนและฝักแก่ยังกินเป็นผักสดได้อีกด้วย แต่กินได้ไม่ค่อยเยอะ รสชาติจะฝาดเฝื่อนนิดๆ😅 แต่ก็กินกับน้ำพริกอร่อยจริง ยอดอ่อนก็ยังกินเป็นผักป่าได้อีก เช่น กินกับเมนูลาบ ส้มตำและน้ำพริก รสชาติิของยอดอ่อนกินง่ายและกินได้เยอะกว่าเมล็ด😀ไม้ต้นนี้ยังช่วยบำรุงดินและยึดจับชั้นดินได้เป็นอย่่างดี😊
พูดถึงเรื่องเก็บฟืนมาใช้สอยในครัวเรือน สมัยก่อนรุ่นพ่อแม่ปูย่าตายายของพวกเราก็ออกหาเก็บฟืนมาก่อไฟกันตลอด ฟืนหมดใช้ตอนไหนก็เข้าป่าไปหาเก็บฟืนมาใช้ แต่ทุกวันนี้พื้นที่ป่าก็เหลือน้อยลงไปทุกวันๆ ตามไร่นาหรือไร่สวนส่วนก็แทบไม่มีไม้ป่าให้เก็บฟืนเลย ในขณะที่ตัวเมืองและชานเมือง พื้นที่เกษตรและพื้นที่อุตสาหกรรมต่างก็กินพื้นที่ป่าไปอย่างต่อเนื่อง 😐
ด้วยวิถีชีวิตที่เปลี่ยนไปหลายคนคงขาดความสัมพันธ์ในการพึ่งพาธรรมชาติจากเรื่องบ้านๆนี้ไปแล้วเพราะทุกบ้านต่างก็มีแก๊สมีไฟฟ้าใช้กัน อยากทำอาหารก็แค่เปิดเตาแก๊สหรือเตาอบไมโครเวฟ ทุกอย่างง่ายสะดวกรวดเร็วทันใจ เนื่องด้วยเหตุผลมากมาย เช่น อยู่ห้องเช่า หรือบ้านที่ซื้อในเมือง แต่เชื่อว่าวัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านนี้ยังคงใช้กันในระดับท้องถิ่นอยู่ ถ้าวันหนึ่งเราไม่มีแก๊สหรือไฟฟ้าใช้ ก็นึกถึงการเก็บฟืนมาใช้แทนได้ง่ายๆ😀
ความสัมพันธ์ของเรากับธรรมชาติจะดำเนินต่อไปอย่างสอดคล้องและกลมกลืนได้ เพียงแค่ต้องกลับคืนสู่วิถีธรรมชาติ ตามหลักการบ้านๆที่ว่า ชีวิตวิถีคนป่า+วิถีพื้นบ้าน = วิถียั่งยืน😍

ฤดูกาลแห่งผักสดก็มาแล้วเช่นกัน😅
ผักสดเหล่านี้เป็นผักพื้นบ้านทั้งหมด ส่วนใหญ่เกิดเองทั้งตามแปลงผักถาวรและที่พวกเราปลูกไว้ ช่วงฤดูกาลนี้ของทุกปีพืชผักพื้นบ้านและผักป่าเติบโตกันเต็มที่จึงทำให้ได้เก็บกินเป็นประจำทุกวัน พวกเราชอบกินผักพื้นบ้านและผักป่ามากที่สุด เพราะดูแลง่ายหรือแทบจะไม่ต้องดูแลอะไรเลย คือเขาโตเองโตเร็วและแข็งแรงทนทานต่อแมลง ที่สำคัญผักพื้นบ้านนี้ยังอุดมไปด้วยวิตามินและแร่ธาตุมากมายที่ร่างกายต้องการ กินแล้วช่วยให้เจริญอาหาร ช่วยย่อยอาหาร และบำรุงเลือดเป็นอย่างดี ความรู้สึกและอารมณ์ของเราก็จะดีไปด้วยเพราะพืชผักเหล่านี้ต่างก็แข็งแรงและมีความสุขที่ได้เติบโตเองอย่างอิสระ ถ้าความเป็นอยู่ของพวกเขาดีอะไรที่มากินพวกเขาต่อก็จะดีไปด้วยตามหลักทางธรรมชาติ😋

มะวานที่พวกเราเราขึ้นไปเอาข้าวให้ไก่และดูพระอาทิตย์ตก พอดีถือโทรศัพท์ติดตัวไปด้วย และนี่ก็คือวิวยามเย็นสวยสุดๆที่ได้เห็นกัน! เหตุที่หมอกทั้งหนาและสูงถึงเพียงนี้ก็คือ ฝนตกทั้งวันแล้วก็หยุดตกก่อนจะมืดค่ำ มันแปลกมากๆ เพราะนี่มันกำลังจะเข้าฤดูร้อนแล้ว แต่มันเป็นเรื่องดีมากสำหรับพืชสวน ต้นไม้ต่างก็มีความสุขกัน พวกเราเองก็ไม่ต้องรดน้ำผักไปอีกอาทิตย์หนึ่งเลยทีเดียว!
ช่วงไม่กี่เดือนมานี้อาจจะไม่ค่อยเห็นพวกเราอัพเดตเรื่องราวของสวนลงในสังคมอออนไลน์เท่าไหร่ มีเหตุผลอยู่ว่า ไม่อยากจะพกพาโทรศัพท์ติดตัวตลอดและอยากจะสนุกเพลิดเพลินไปกับสิ่งที่พวกเราทำกัน แทนที่จะมัวขบคิดว่ามันจะดูยังไงในรูปถ่าย แต่ยังไงพวกเราก็คงจะมาอัตเดตกันบ่อยขึ้นหลังจากนี้ ถ้ามีเวลาและแรงบันดาลใจ😄
Yesterday we finally had our phone with us again when we went to feed the chicken/watch the sunset, and this is what we were rewarded with! It rained the whole day and just cleared up before dusk - very strange, considering that it's dry season. Well, the garden loves it, the trees are happy, and we don't have to water our vegetables for at least another week!
We've been rather quiet on social media for the past few months, for no particular reason other than that we don't want to carry around our phone all the time, and just enjoy things instead of thinking how they would look like on camera 😀 Call it a partial digital detox! 😁 Well, maybe from now on we'll post more regularly, if we find the time and motivation 😜
